Transplanting a small cotinus

My small cotinus is about 60cms high and about 70 cms wide. When would be the best time to transplant it and what precausions should I take. It is about three years old. Thank you

Water it well beforehand, prepare the hole (and water the area if it's dry) beforehand, and lift as big a ball/block of soil around the roots as you can. A general rule is that the root ball extends about as far as the top growth but it might not be right for a young plant. If the soil is inclined to crumble away, try working a sheet of plastic or an old compost bag underneath to lift the rootball in one piece as best you can. Then keep it well-watered after the move. Here I would wait a month or two until the weather is cooler and wetter, but it might already be cooler and wetter up there in Scotland.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Thanks Jenny, I had planned to move it late September if that was feasible so that looks like a reasonable time for the move.
Weather still holding up at present without much rain!!!!
