Maybe a stupid question but I dont get it

Hello - If you have a border shaded by a fence that means its a shady/partially shady border. However if the plant grows over the height of the fence the top of the plant will be getting full sun. So do you go for full sun plants or shady plants? If you get full sun then it will have to grow in the shade until it grows over the fence which it might not because its in the shade? And vice versa if you have a shady plant that's all fine in shade wont it start struggling when it grows higher than the fence? I guess the best bet is to not get a plant that's grows that high but I want it high for privacy.

thanks for your help!

You are quite right, it is a conundrum. I would say that if you are planting low-growing plants, choose ones that like shade but if your plants will soon romp up above the fence, look for the sort that like a bit of both sun and shade.
It's even worse when you have a border where the sun comes round and blasts everything for half the day and the rest of the time it's in shade. Experience has taught me to start with tough, tolerant and cheap plants and let them teach me how it goes. I don't launch into anything challenging or exotic until I know more about how that area performs.

One plant that likes its feet in the shade and it’s face in the sun is the honeysuckle … but it needs deep root space and damp shade not dry shade … or lots and lots of watering 💦
