Replacing a dead climbing rose with something else.

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
The rose has died of neglect and drought. I never really liked it.
I know I can't replace it with a rose, much as I'd like to.
There's an ivy wall behind and a 3-4ft bed in front West facing.
I was thinking of a clematis or two but is there anything else worth considering?

If you dig out a big enough hole and replace the soil, you can plant another rose, can't you? I would.

I'm not sure I'm up for all that effort😕 Heavy clay.

Would a star jasmine (trachy something or other) work? They don't like an exposed location so the shelter of a wall would be ideal and mine doesn't seem to mind a bit of drought and neglect. Lovely scent and evergreen.

It would need some support but maybe you could leave the framework of the dead rose in place for it to twine up.
