I don't suppose the industry will put too much effort into a good alternative. They know we will have little option but to accept whatever rubbish they decide to sell as compost. Many of us don't have the ability to produce it for ourselves.
That's not what happened with smoking. Billions has been poured into improving alternative products to create new consumers for the likes of Philip Morris, BAT and others.
Very different situations. People can decide to smoke or not, whereas most people who currently use peat based composts will have no alternative but to use peat free, or stop using compost and therefore stop growing plants. The smoker/vaper market is far more profitable than the compost market. One is year round and people purchase the product on a daily or weekly basis, the other is purchased, by most, for a short period each year.
I use a compost at the moment that is about 30% pete based on my Grandad's advice.
My Grandad reckons that pete free is rubbish. He says hes grown things from seed, side by side and from the same seed packets. One in pete free and one in pete based. He said the pete free seedlings died or the grown plants didn't do half as well in pete.
He's been gardening for 60 years, and was a professional gardener for almost all his working life.
Anyone else have similar or contradicting experience?
Gardener of a driveway pot garden - flowers one side, veg the other and a car in the middle. I am so looking forward to the day we can move into a house with a bigger garden.
