Cosmos not flowering

I have a cosmos plant with lots of folliage but doesn’t seem to be flowering. What do I need to do to get it to flower?

@drew.rycroft I don't really understand but I have grown two different cosmos this year Rubenza which has flowered all summer and another form not sure what it is but it has spent all summer getting taller and has only just started to flower. In a way I am pleased because it will extend the flowering time into the autumn.

Ignore it... no fertiliser or drink or affection. They don't deign to flower when conditions are too good.

Most of mine were flowering in April/May, but a couple are stubbornly like yours despite my not having fertilised them... it's just one of those plants that does what it wants.

I’ve always picked mine out so to delay flowering,  they will flower in September.
Monty sows seeds in June for late flowering,  don’t feed the plant,  it will come later.

  • Thanks for the advice. Were the seeds with the august gardeners world magazine. Didn’t have this issue last year but last year was using bog standard compost not miraclegro compost. Not currently feeding. The other seedling that I planted in my raised bed hasn’t flowered yet either and is getting lots of feed as there are also chilli and sweet corn in the raised bed.

Cosmos like poor soil to do well.

At least they have lovely foliage even if they will flower late. One of my neighbours was highly interested in my "trees" lol

If planted into rich soil (manure/compost/fertiliser) they will get bigger and flower later, but you have the advantage of getting blooms later into the autumn. Keep it well watered.
