How to replace my lawn

Hi all,

I have a very neglected lawn / garden that is full of nettles, thistle and all kinds of weed.

What's left of the lawn is very lumpy (we had moles) and when I took a closer look you can grab at big handfuls of dead grass/thatch which are sitting above the ground.

Looking for some tips on how to go about stripping back to get this ready for re-seeding?

Would this be rotovated or do I need to hire a turf cutter to remove the old grass?

All and any advice appreciated!!

Blimey are you thinking of new turf for that lot ?
The first thing to do I would think is to get it levelled off somehow and then see what you’re left with .Big job I reckon .

I think you need a plan. It's no use doing the lawn if you are then going to trudge all over it making beds or paths or a patio and play area. Make a plan, dig out what's coming out, put in anything structural like paths and fencing, Mark out and prepare the soil for beds or a veg garden/play area and so on THEN worry about the lawn.
  • Thanks for all the comments so far. My Plan is to have the majority of the garden as a new lawn. I have enough seed and fertilizer to cover the whole area. Just wondering how to go about removing the existing lawn, or if i should even do this? The weeds at the back and side have all been killed off and ready to be removed. One idea was to rotorvate / powerrake the whole area and level off before seeding?

    thanks

You'd need to kill the whole 'lawn' off first (with glyphosate). Then rotovate, level, compact and seed. Big job with that size but potential to be a lovely area. It would probably pay to also strip-off the turf layer. This layer is very difficult to break-up even with rotovator without leaving lumps which then lead to a bumpy lawn.
