It's just a fungus, not doing any harm, it will disappear again in a few days. I'm not the person who can ID it, someone else may know, but as long as you don't eat it you needn't worry about it. Just another wonder of nature
thanks, sadly it comes back every year, I have dug it out twice already. It is in the middle of the garden and I have 2 small kids so we are not able to leave it.
It could be a saprophytic fungus which get their nutrition entirely from dead or decayed organic matter. The vast majority of fungi are saprophytic, these are harmless and often beneficial. There may be rotting wood, for example under the earth that it's feeding on. They often grow on dying trees and rotten wood. You could try removing the soil and replacing it and re-seeding but the mycelium (roots) of fungi can spread quite far.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Maybe a type of carbuncle. They (and other fungus) pop up wherever there's rotting tree roots in the ground. They'll go away once the roots are gone. Meanwhile just keep taking them out.
