Heuchera plant advise

Hello,

I recently bought two variety of heuchera - Purple Palace and Leuchtkäfer from my local supermarket. I’ve put them in slightly bigger pots with more compost as both of them were root bound. Anyhow, I was thinking of planting them in my font garden (east-facing)and would like to know if it needs dividing them right now or should I let them grow stronger for sometime and then divide them next year in spring as they would be more established by then.

Many Thanks

J

Hello JayB I would divide them now when you take them out of their pots to replant in the ground. They will then have a chance of settling in before winter. Watch out for the dreaded vine weevil though as they love heucheras.

  • @Ladybird4, thanks for the tip. Anything I can do to prevent vine weevil?

    thanks

  • Ok I read up a bit on this pest and it can affect fuschia’s as well. I have 5 fuschia’s  currently growing in my front garden and haven’t seen any damage yet. I do use neem spray for my veggies, so was wondering if it would help spraying on heuchera once a week?

    thanks
  • A good layer of grit or crushed eggshells can often deter VW from laying their eggs - easier when they are in pots.  It's really the grubs which do the most damage by burrowing in and around the plant roots.  Look to prevention rather than cure  :)
Re the dividing - it really depends on the size of the plants - not much point dividing now if they are quite small.  That can easily be done next Spring.

@jaybeestar78 you can get a biological control for vine weevil which you can water onto the ground once you know that there are vine weevils about. Look out for fat, white comma shaped grubs with a dark brown head. Leave them out for the birds to hoover up - or squish them. The vine weevils themselves are a dirty grey colour and are quite good at playing dead if overturned.

There is no point spraying plants if the vine weevils have already hatched as they are underground. Another favourite plant family of the vine weevil is the primula group.

  • Ok, thanks for the info will definitely keep an eye on it. Currently I repotted the plants in 2l pots, they were originally in 7cm square pots.

Hi again. Your plants are quite small so I think you would be better following @philippasmith2's advice. They may still be too small to divide in Spring but you will be the better judge of that when you see their size then.

  • Those aren’t Vine Weevil grubs (they are Chafer grubs).
