It’ll soon be time to plant bulbs for flowering early next spring … I would get some early crocus corms … something like Cream Beauty … https://www.jparkers.co.uk/25-crocus-chrysanthus-cream-beauty-1002603c

and plant them in September or October

or some of the tiny daffodils like Narcissus ‘Minnow’ https://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/narcissus-minnow/

you can put lots in so you get a really good display. The garden centres will be getting their bulbs in very soon and children are very good at planting them … to be honest there’s not a lot that can go wrong. 😊

Then over the top of those I’d plant some of the little bedding violas you can get in packs from the garden centre.  They look like small pansies and reliably flower their socks off all winter and spring.

When the bulbs are over it’ll be time to think about your summer flowering plants and you can take the crocus forms etc  out and plant them in the garden to naturalise and flower again next spring.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
