They are quite shallow rooted, so if it's growing so fast, keep an eye that it's stable. I managed to pull mine out by hand. If it's near a building or your area is prone to high winds or storms, keep the roots in mind.
Birches are popular with garden design shows and landscape TV shows, maybe that's why they were/are so fashionable. They can be very beautiful, but tricky, yes.
Thanks Fire. Yes, I've noticed that the soil actually moves up and down if I rock the trunk from side to side. It's near a greenhouse and a shed so I think for now I'll just keep an eye on it and be prepared to move it if necessary.
