Try some roses the ones that smell nice I personally do not like the scentless ones grown for show or standard ones but we all have our opinions. They like manure. You can plant pot grown rose anytime but bare root ones can only be planted at certain times of the year so my gardening book says.
That looks great! Nice colour palette. Have you plants survived a winter yet? Be interested to hear which ones prove(d) hardy where you are🙂
Some of these are perennials, so we'll see how they do. The verbena bonariensis I'm hoping will self-seed, since I love that perhaps more than any other flower. The Dahlias will have to come out, and the blue salvias will die back. But I have a good idea of what I want to do next year, and it will be part of the fun to see what either comes up, either through self-seeding, or what manages to make it through the winter. I'm in an odd zone--the crape myrtle bush in the back of the border, which was the source for the whole color scheme isn't supposed to survive here, so I think I'm in a microclimate that's more properly a 6. So we'll see!
What a beautiful feast for the eyes, and pollinators. Hope it inspires your neighbours to follow suit!
Thank you! There are a few of us in our neighborhood who've stumbled upon Monty Don and the whole gang at Gardeners World. We're determined to transform the whole neighborhood, one house at a time! We're notorious here in America for boring front lawns, and there are many of us who are choosing to do what I did here, so we shall see! Some nice folks stop and chat with me when I'm out tending to the flower bed, and I've gotten a lot of compliments, so that's fun and encouraging. And I'm already beginning to plan what I'm going to do with the rest of the front lawn next year. First step: plant a lot of bulbs this fall!
What a beautiful transformation. Do you have a plant list for the curious-minded?
Thank you! I will be compiling a plant list soon, if for nothing else, my own records, so I know what seeds to buy to start indoors next winter. When I do, I'll be sure to put it here. It's one of those things where I keep adding plants as I need them, and I'm always guided by the color palette, and I've sort of lost track of all that's in there! I've stuffed it to the gills, though--one does hate so much to see bare ground, and there's always room for one more plant!
@TboneDano That is a beautiful transformation. I hope you have started a trend and that neighbours and passers by will want to follow. I have kept a garden diary for many years it is always helpful when buying plants and seed. Covering the ground not only stops weeds but holds in moisture too. Good luck with your project the beneficial insects that live locally will be making a 'bee line to your door'.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

I love working in my front garden specifically for the social aspect of chatting with neighbours and passers-by. Takes me twice as long to get a job done but it’s good to exchange hints, tips and cuttings with others. Your bed really makes a fab impact, I’m looking forward to your planting list.
