Padron peppers blowing my socks off!

We love shop bought padron peppers so we grew six fantastic plants with lots of flowers and lots of fruit. We tried some for the first time a couple of weeks ago from various plants and they nearly burst our eardrums!! Super hot!! I know you can get an odd hot one every now and then but these are all really hot. It's fine we can use them like regular chilies but why are they so hot? Over water? Under water? What has happened?

    I think it depends on when you pick them.
    The longer you leave them the hotter they become

    We picked them when they are 4 or 5cm long - about the same length as the ones you get in the shops.

    Padron peppers are not hot. My favourite, my father used to grow them. Recipe if you are interested.

    You must have bought some other seed if they are hot.

    At the size you picked them they shouldn't be hot.
    So maybe you have got another variety.

    Assuming you are picking them green ( I would presume so,) then the only explanation I can think of is that the seeds have gotten mixed up at some point (ie either at your end if you are growing other chilli varieties as well , or at the seller's end).Anecdotally - growing chillies 'meaner' ie with less water and food , does make them hotter , but drought this year notwithstanding I cannot think that that would account for such a huge difference. Sorry not to be able to help beyond this.

    Yes, may well be that Sutton sent you the wrong seeds.
