If it helps @TheGardenerFromMars, I did some more browsing over the weekend and have ordered a bulk bag of "Wintermix Compost Garden Mulch".  This is described by the supplier as "a rich blend of screened organic black compost and organic mushroom compost (well rotted horse and chicken manure) with a dash of bark fines for good measure.  It is packed full of nutrients ideal for plants, flowers or veggies and can be used any time during the Autumn or Winter months ready for those lush Spring borders!"

My garden has dry, sandy soil, and is free draining.  I decided against plain farmyard manure or the equivalent as I grow a lot of ornamental grasses and thought it would be too rich for them.  I've also decided against using bark as a mulch this year because the blackbirds have suddenly decided it's better on all my paths, patio, driveway and lawn!

If you grow edible crops, annuals or flowering shrubs like roses, a richer mulch of farmyard manure may suit you better.  I suggest you look for a local supplier online who is more likely to offer free delivery and phone them to see which of their products would suit your situation best.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

  • Many thanks! I’ll see what local suppliers there are…
