Magnolia - how far from house?

borgadrborgadr Posts: 718
I've got a magnolia stellata in a large pot, and I'd like to plant it out this autumn once there's some moisture in the ground.  I've got a nice spot for it on a lawn but it would be just a couple of metres from the house.  The house is 500 years old, so I'm told the foundations are likely to be very shallow  - I guess that means I should think about roots not going under the house

RHS says that stellata has a maximum spread of 2.5-4 metres.  Does that mean I should consider 4 metres to be the minimum safe distance I should plant it from the house?

    I don't think it'll be a problem.
They're not huge plants and by the time the roots have reached your property they will be quite small.
If your house has been there for 500 years it's built on very stable ground and had no need for deep foundations (if any). Many very old properties have no foundations as they're built on rock so won't move anyway.
