new garden - but what to plant?

In my new garden I have a  large area of "green vegetation" in full sun on a sandy/gravelly soil base so obviously very dry.  I wonder   which plants you would suggest for a new flower bed.  I have already started compost bins but obviously it will be next year before they can do any good. I have sedum autumn joy and flag iris rhisomes and am about to take some salvia cuttings (the tough red one and hot lips).  With not much money to spend I would appreciate ideas that can be seed sown or easily multiplied by cuttings.  Thank you.

@gardeninggranny I created a new border in January and planted it up early spring. Because it looked a little empty I have planted 'a sea' of Cosmos Rubenza. Easy from seed but needs lots of deadheading I have had hundreds of flowers from ten plug plants.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

Verbena bonariensis multiplies very readily, through cuttings or seeding.

  • @gardeninggranny - if you are on a tight budget, you may like to have a look on the seed and plant swap thread - you don't have to have anything to swap and you may find something to suit :)

Hardy geraniums are easy to propagate, if you have any friends or neighbours growing them, they might give you some.I often pot up bits when I am gardening and leave them on the front path for passers by, as they spread so well.  :)
