Compost.

Why.is my compost  bin always full of small flies that bite me ? I only put in vegetables etc it seems to be  doing fine breaking  everything down with loads of worms etc, but the flies are a nuisance . Thanks for your help  Tony.

    It’s  all part of natures pattern. Compost flies feed and lay eggs in rotting vegetation. It’s what helps break plant material down.
    Not sure if you mean you put cooked vegetables in bin, not good idea! 
    Is yours a covered bin? Try leaving the lid off.
  • No I never put cooked items in,,I will try to leave the top open though thanks for that.

    I'm afraid I put anything and everything in our bin and have always assumed the swarm of tiny flies was part of the process.  I just get the lid back on ASAP.

    It may help to sprinkle the surface with wood chip or sawdust when you add a load. It might keep the flies down.
  • Or a layer of soil.
