  It is considered a weed in South Africa where it has accidentally been introduced.  I'd fork or pull or hoe it out if I were you.

  One of the links that @Silver surfer posted says "deep tap root, very difficult to uproot" so I think I'd get it out before it really gets settled in.

  I wonder how it got here (birdseed? imported coir in compost?), and whether it would survive a UK winter.

  Thanks Silver Surfer and JennyJ for the responses - I think I'll dispose of the plant in the immediate future, it does look bent on world domination (very fast growth).  It could have come from Ericaceous compost, composted bark, or one of 2 different nursery plants.  I'll never know, but quite an interesting plant to see.
