Rowan tree

My Rowan tree has been fine for over 25 years. This year hardly any leaves or berries at all, and had some fungal growth on the main tree trunk/bark, which I removed. Any ideas?

Hi @raenderson and welcome to the forum 😊

Could it be suffering from drought? … in this part of the country we’ve had very little rain for getting on for nine months.

Also they’re often not long-lived trees.

@Fairygirl grows rowans … maybe she’ll see this thread …

If it hasn't had any reasonable growth this year- ie foliage/flowers,  I doubt it will recover and suddenly come to life. Low rainfall certainly won't have done it any favours, because they thrive on water. It's virtually impossible to overwater them.
Rowans here are in autumn mode a bit early, fully ripe berries for the last few weeks, and that's down to stress caused by drier conditions over the last year. They're still fine, because we simply haven't had the severe dry conditions that other areas have had. As they aren't terribly deep rooted trees, so it's important they get enough water to prevent them drying out.
They don't tend to live more than around 20 to 30 years on average, so it may well be a combination. If it has fungal growth too, that can be a sign of an earlier problem, and these things can get a hold on stressed trees more easily.
If you have a photo, that could help though.  :)

I am afraid the fungal growth may be bad news. If it's breaking out on the trunk like that the infection inside will likely to be extensive.  If it's in the root system that will stop the tree taking up water.
