Shrubs / Plants to keep dog away from fence

Hello, advice please.
We have neighbours who have dogs. Our gardens are separated by a 6 foot North facing fence. Any ideas on shrubs/plants that may deter our dog from attacking the fence to get to the neighbour’s dogs? The dogs meet in different environments and get on fine 🙄 TIA

  • Your dog can scent the NDN's dogs thru the fence - a thick evergreen hedge may help but it will obviously take a while to establish. The hedging plants you choose would depend on your location, aspect and soil conditions.

Our dog does exactly the same when she hears our neighbours dog in the garden. Unfortunately she pays no attention to the shrubs in front of our fence, and sometimes manages to dig/push her way behind the shrubs (in this case a Privet hedge). She has also managed to uproot all of the Clematis that we planted by the fence, by running frenzedly up and down beside the fence.

We are trying to train her not to bark and go mad when she hears the other dog. It requires patience and persistence, and she still hasn't always gotten the message. If she does bark or go mad, we immediately take her inside the house, and leave her for 5 minutes or so. She will eventually learn that she gets put inside if she keeps barking.

I'd suggest you try training to resolve the issue, as you might be very disappointed (and a few pennies poorer), if you plant some shrubs only for things to continue as they are. Some may suggest spiky shrubs, but we have a huge Pyracantha hedge, and our dog pays no attention to it when running wildly up against it.  The madness takes over them when they hear another dog.

Ours also gets on fine with the neighbours dog when they are face to face. They are basically protecting their territory and you.

Thank you. You describe our situation exactly! Like you, we have been trying to train him by putting him inside, persistence and patience is indeed the key. I’ll have more of a think before investing in plants………. 🤔
