How about a hedge of Escallonia?  It's happy in clay, evergreen and attractive to wildlife.  I like the dark red flowered variety which grows very well here, forming a shiny dense screen, even in coastal locations.  Here's details from one supplier:

If you want cheap/ narrow/height/evergreen /privacy  then a trellis with an evergreen honeysuckle might be the answer.
    One plant would be enough.
    eg Lonicera Henryi Copper Beauty.
    Perthshire. SCOTLAND .
  • I will hopefully keep him off the veg by building the beds. He doesn't tend to jump up at things and the beds will be high where he can't cock his leg over the top.
I like the look of the Escallonia as well.
I like the idea of some colour and I think it is probably between a rose hedge, they look gorgeous or the Escallonia which doesn't look quite as nice but would be evergreen.
I already have 2 evergreen honeysuckles that I am hoping to train over my arch. They are lovely but was looking for something different to what I already have.
