Scabiosa caucasica 'Perfecta Blue'

harmonyharmony Posts: 403
Hi, I am trying my hand at growing Scabiosa Caucasica from seed. I have started them off in a tray and they are just starting to poke through. I'm hoping I can get them through the winter then plant them out in the spring. I have only got a plastic mini greenhouse but it is in a very sheltered  position. Any advice welcome. Thanks

As you may know they're very hardy plants when mature, so I the best plan is to try and keep them growing well before any bad weather comes along.
Your little greenhouse may be ok, but keep the doors open - the most likely thing to kill them is excessive damp or wet.
If I overwinter a few plants I leave them up against the north side of my greenhouse (shed etc) it stops most of the rain and gives protection from the south-west where most of the wet weather comes from. I put a few big pots around them to keep nosey foxes away.
If you have something like perlite or vermiculite, you could use some when you pot them up to help with drainage.
They are lovely plants. They don't do that well here as they prefer neutral/alkaline soil and mine is slightly acidic so I bought one recently and put it in a pot.
    Good luck with them :)
