Hello Gardeners World Forum. Novice gardener here trying to save my Japanese Maple from this worrying blackness that has appeared on the trunk. Any advice very welcome!
It looks like a sticky wet liquid. Is there any wound or bark damage that this liquid is oozing from? Some trees can get a bacterial infection and exude a bacterial ooze. Never seen it black before. Is the tree otherwise healthy? Could someone have poured something on it?
I agree that is what it looks like. It's sap that has oozed out for whatever reason then sooty mould has turned it black. I'm afraid I have no idea what the cause may be though.

Oozing sap is due to damage or stress. Only thing I can suggest is keep it as happy as possible - plenty of advice on line about looking after garden trees. Fertilizer will not help, though an organic mulch might.
Are there any other symptoms like wilting, yellowing leaves or blackened/dying branches? If so, there's the possibility that it may be root rot caused by phytophthora: Phytophthora root rot / RHS Gardening
I would clear all the vegetation from around it and get a good look at it .See where it starts e.g. does the black stuff go or come from below the soil level . If the rest of the tree looks ok I would then assume that it’s not that bad ………yet . Then consult the books and try to discover what it might be .
My acers have never had anything like that before .Sorry I can’t be any more helpful .
