Plant ID

Can anyone ID this pond plant? The grass was dug out of a pond last night and given to my other half as a gift but I’m struggling to find out what it exactly is aside from a grass.

Could it be one of the papyrus types of plant - Cyperus

Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
  • The foliage is quite similar, im not sure due to the flowers though.

It's not something I've grown since I had one in a bucket in my bedroom when I was a teenager, and my  memory does't stretch that far back so I can remember what it looked like :)

  • Could it be one of the Carex family? Rushes are round, sedges have edges and grasses are flat. That could be a way in to tell you which group it belongs to.
  • Not a Cyperus  :)

I don’t know what it’s called, but someone gave me a root and it’s taken over,  I though we would be able to tame it, as we’d put it in a container, but we couldn’t.
I would be very wary of putting it in your pond unless you have a very large one where it doesn’t matter.
as you can see here, it’s gone right across the back and sprung up at the opposite front corner.

  • Oh heck, I did worry that it was something that was quite invasive, I only have a little pond …. I have a half barrel that I could plant it in instead so that it can be contained and positioned near the pond atleast … that way I also don’t offend the other half by not planting it in the actual pond 🤔🤭 Might that be the better option?

… in fact, it’s so special you’re actually making a special feature of it 😇
