Growing conditions

What flowers can I grew near a Cricket Bat Willow.    To the side of my house I have some large trees including Ash, Cricket Bat Willow which were planted years ago by the local Council.    I have raised flower beds but, of course, the roots from these trees always find there way in and with this years weather it has been even worse.   I usually grow Chrysanthemums and Dahlias  as I like to go flowers for picking.   I am not able to do a lot of heavy work and usually only water new plants and those in pots.
Can anyone help.

It would be helpful to have a pic and also information on the aspect of the bed in question - north/south facing?  What soil do you have in the beds?  Are you able to improve it?
