I just use it for decorative purposes Dave.. it does get mixed in over time, with watering and such.. Any slow release will do for one feed per season, if you are also liquid feeding.. I do like Vitax Azalea though.. I top up with liquid tomorite for the rest of the year..
I would caution over the large pebbles. I'd want to keep them away from the crown of the rose.. that's where your basal growth will come from, especially on The Pilgrim. Depends how big they are..
I have seen that one of the pots may have ants, these can be bad yes? The soil is very finely ground and have seen some crawling on the stems - ignore or ??
As mentioned in my thread above, I turned the irrigation off two days back and the soil still seems too damp, I'll leave it off some more I think. The pots all have drains but maybe my staggered watering just works too well?

The stones are away from the root/stem areas as the squirrels mainly dig in the open parts of the pots.
