Dahlia Tubers - plant or wait!

  • So I opened up all the packets and almost every tuber had sprouted, some around three inches long, most around 1/2 inch. However... below around 30 packs was nothing but an unlabelled mound of tubers in the bottom of the box...! Very little growth on these as you would expect, looked like they just swept up the greenhouse and threw it in a box  :D

Well, pot up the ones you have and see what happens!
The basis of most gardening. 🌱

  • Yep, these are some of the ones I potted up, I have left the shoots above ground as well as the growing tip - is that the right thing to do?

That's exactly what I did but I kept the pots in the shade simply because I thought the shoots would get frazzled in the sun and heat. They grew on really well and I can pinch out some now. Good luck!
    Late to gardening .... @cheznousgarden

I thought I’d add a bit of a progress report and data point for fellow novices one month on, the tubers in labelled packages have come on a treat!

Ignore the white flowers which are an established Dahlia, but there are plenty of buds and even a flower! Might be Art Deco if my labelling was accurate.

Really chuffed with progress, weather no doubt helped but we’ve been away for half of the time and left them to their own devices! As the weather starts to turn I’m thinking about Winter and whether to dig them up so quickly or get them in the pots in a greenhouse?

As for the sweepings, I planted them in a raised bed and not as much growth, as expected, but still a few worth looking after over winter:

Great! With the sweepings, it proves it's worth planting up single bits of tuber.
  • What on earth is going on here? How have they done that in a month?

I have plants I started months ago that are still to flower!  :|

I think someone said the same thing earlier on up re earlier plants, for mine it looks like a combination of decent produce not having sold in the regular season, and a very warm end to the Summer, that have worked wonders!

Nothing special in the soil, combination of existing compost and a couple of new bags, plenty of watering for the first week and then left to grow... hopefully bodes well for next year!
