Can this climbing rose be saved?

techskeltechskel Posts: 37
I've been given an unwanted climbing rose (Purple Skyliner I believe), only problem is that it's been cut back including the canes.
Will this effect it as climber? Ideally it was to grow on the side of the shed.
Thanks.

..it looks good, just plant it when suitable.  Cutting it back won't have affected its character in any way..

I agree, the cutting back has not harmed it at all and it looks really healthy, lucky you!

Don't expect it to take off this year, it doesn't do much in the first season anyway.  It'll be next year and the following before you start to see it develop the way you want it..  one has to be patient with this rose to some extent..

It's not a true climbing rose, but can be trained rambler fashion when established..

Interesting. For me, Purple Skyliner took off immediately and behaved like a climber from the first season. After I had problems with other climbers establishing, I was really happy to see it. It's a very good and vigorous rose and easy to train. Good luck with it.

In areas with higher rainfall it may establish quicker but it's news to me.   That doesn't happen where I am unfortunately..

I'm in Lancashire so we tend to get decent rain.. Well usually.

The two other climbers I got last year have took off well but of course they hadn't been cut right down.
Slightly dissapointed in one I got from Peter Beals, Open Arms I think. Very spindly growth and not much or a repeater. Though I've seen it described that it repeats & that it won't so not such a big deal.
The 'pink patio climber' has been brilliant. Cheaper one as well... Of course!
This will be the first one I've trained to a wall, my others are on obelisks.

..that's ok, but as your rose is in a pot, and still busy flowering, what I mean is, it's unlikely to make much growth this summer into autumn, after planting.  It needs to go through a winter first to get itself established from being containerised like that.  Hopefully it'll take off for you next Spring and see an improvement in Open Arms too...
