Grass identification

_MH__MH_ Posts: 16
Hi everyone,

I have some large grass sprung up in a couple of borders that I swear wasn't there a couple of years ago.  At first I thought it was an ornamental grass that I must have missed when we bought the place but it seems to be getting bigger and spreading.  I wondered whether anyone can identify it from these photos so I can investigate how best to control it if it starts to swamp other plants.  The blades are about 3-4ft long but the stems with seeds/catkins on the end are probably about 6ft if held vertical!

Many thanks
Mike

Carex pendula, a bit big for the average garden and inclined to seed a lot

    In the sticks near Peterborough

If you can't get it out, you can take the seed heads off. It's a real thug in most gardens, and you could end up with more of that than anything else.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Many thanks!  There's one border I definitely need to dig it out of (you can see the head of the small statue it's swamping in the first photo) but it's a pretty big garden so looks fine in some places and fills a few gaps I'm too tight/lazy to fill!  But I wouldn't want it to take over so cutting off the seed heads is an excellent tip.

Thanks again - what a great forum!

@_MH_ It is a sedge as @nutcutlet has said Carex pendula. It can cause problems in some waterways.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
