No runner beans yet this year....

Send your extra beans my way, as I've had terrible luck with them this year as well! The first round of plants got mostly eaten by snails and those that survived have only just started to flower in the last week or so. I started off a late second round which are growing quickly but haven't flowered yet. So far no beans at all. This time last year I had tons of beans.

Next year I might try a different variety. I usually just buy the standard cheap ones you get at Aldi/Lidl (Scarlet Emperor I think?). Perhaps there is a variety that will be more reliable.

Moonlight … those of use who are getting good results this year all seem to be growing Moonlight.
They look and taste like runners but they’ve got some French beans in their ancestry and so are self fertile and slightly less fussy about conditions. Marvellous!

I think I'll order some, having seen everyone's reports of good results! The only reason I buy seeds primarily from Aldi is because I see them there by the door when I go in to get groceries. Even the fancy seeds aren't terribly expensive.
  • The forum displays the pic the way you took it, try turning your phone clockwise 90 degrees next time.

no I definitely took it the right way.... ;)
No you turned your phone round which is why the pics have turned round with it.
I took these today whilst working outside, one is with phone the right way, the other isn't.

IME and that of others it depends on the software on your device.

A small edit is a useful work-around for those who find their photos are posting sideways whichever way up they take them.

I can assure you, I didn't. It is a tall plant, and therefore I held the phone the right way up - in the shape of the plant. But thanks for your input  :)

The wonders of technology eh? 🤪… sometimes it helps to know it’s not us going mad 😂 … and that like a lot of things, including gardening, there’s sometimes no black and white/right or wrong way of doing something. 👍

    Have a lovely day 😎

Have just remembered the name of my beans,  Enorma,  cheap in Wilco,  grew them last year very prolific,  same this year although not big enough to pick yet.

Read this on Kings website,  this is what I have to do,  I’ve never had flower drop.

    HANDY TIP FOR FLOWER DROP

Percy Thrower thought that the main cause was slightly acid soil. He recommended applying a dusting of lime to the soil in early winter over the area set aside for runner beans the next year, so that it would get washed into the topsoil by the winters rain. We have tried it and it does work.
