top or sub soil?

Hi
Hope someone can help me.
I have removed a pond from the garden annd have ended up with a 3m long  x 4m wide x .5 metre deep hole. Should i fill half the depth with subsoil and half with top soil or can i fill it all with top soil? I am going to lawn it and have shrubs round the edge.

I guess that depends what you have available for filling the hole.  You only need around 10cm (4") of topsoil for a lawn so that might affect your choice.  The shrubs will need a greater depth of topsoil though - at least 20cm, more if it's available.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • I have both available if i need them. Would it be better to fill with top soil, or are there any disadvantages with doing this?

If you fill too deep with topsoil the organic matter contained within can go anaerobic. (The bacteria and fungi etc that live in and break down this material need good access to oxygen). Typically we don't lay topsoil any deeper than 300mm for this reason. Remember to allow for natural settlement as you fill the hole!
