Ipomea

Can anyone suggest why my Heavenly Blue fails to progress, I don't think it is going to flower. It looks pathetic! It is in a pot containing JI no 2. I don't how to load a photo from my iPhone!

When you say failing to progress what do you mean exactly? Still small, or just not producing flowers?

Impoea can sulk for a lot of reasons including being over cosseted! Too rich a feeding and you get loads of leaves and few flowers, too much space they just tend to sulk and not grow much (they seem to thrive on competition…. But watch out they usually win😂), too much water they drown, not enough they shrivel quickly….

Oh and don’t believe the photos on the packets, if the plant ever flowers all over in the same day, you get little or nothing for days afterwards, I’m sure they doctor all those lovely photos of hundreds of blue flowers on the same plant.

The major problem I have found with it, is planting out too early. They are really temperature sensitive and if I plant them out before the end of June, they just sulk all summer.
How can you lie there and think of England

@Jacquimcmahon It reminds me of the old seed and plant catalogues. the photographs looked like plants on steroids!
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
  • Jaccquimcmahon, I mean it is still small, just a spindly shoot struggling to grow. I think I must accept that this year I won't be treated to its delightful flower. I have grown it before , that why I am mystified! Thank you all.

Like pun doc says sometimes they just sulk. I love all of the morning glories , this year I have pink and purples, but not a single one of the blues took! A true mystery plant.

  • We were given seeds by a neighbour some years ago and  had no success the first year. Then we were told not to sow the seeds until May which we did the next year and have had success. They don't like this hot weather though!
  • I usually try to grow some each year, giving my daughter some of my seedlings. Hers nearly always grow and flower well while mine do nothing. A month ago my daughter's had reached their first floor bedroom window while mine died. I made a second sowing which are now about 12 inches tall, so far I have had 1 flower, my daughter's have been flowering regularly for a couple of weeks.
No idea why the difference except location, soil and care!

I always struggle with them in Shropshire. My sister gardens in Dorset and hers set seed and grow like weeds. It's just not fair!
