Care of rose cuttings

cefaylecefayle Posts: 14
I took a number of cuttings from a rose that had been grown from a flower in my wedding bouquet  (40 years ago).
One cutting was placed in a pot in my new garden.  After several weeks, I was rewarded by shoot with leaves on the main stem.  Since then, we have had a heat wave.  We have moved the pot into the shade, but the leaves have become limp, despite the compost being kept moist.
Initially, we did try rooting it in a potato,  but when the potato sprouted  we repotted the still bare shoot into the compost,  so we have no idea, if roots are growing.

What should we do next, please?

I would say it is over potted.  Normally, once rooted, cuttings are moved into 10, 15 or 20cm pots depending on their size and nature.

Try lifting it, carefully, and putting it in a smaller pot with good drainage so it doesnt sit with wet feet then keep it it ina sheltered corner out of full sun till autumn.  I would also prune back those dead stems.

Sorry, but I think that's dead actually... the little green shoot is just surviving for now off remaining sugars in the stem..  once it turns yellow and brown and woody like that, it's gone.

Sorry I agree with Marlorena. If the cutting turns black at the top, it spreads downwards and nothing will save it. The growth will die regardless. Same happens when the cutting turns black from the bottom. They always die.

Thanks everyone for your help.  Whilst we still have access to the rose  we can try the rooting in water approach.

Good luck. Potatoes don't work. There's a couple of useful Facebook groups called "Rose Propagation" and "Rose Geeks Propagation" where people discuss methods. Having a bit of success now by picking up tips from there.
