    Leave it in the shade, plenty of water, don't feed or prune. Everyone seems to mention late winter, for pruning,for all the Japanese Acer's it's between November and march. You could try scraping a bit of bark,here and there,see if it's still Green.

    Thank you! It’s definitely still alive, and I can even see a tiny bit of new growth. It’s going to be my big challenge to see if I can bring it back to health. I’ve wanted an acer for ages but they’re normally really expensive - if this one survives it will be the bargain of the century!

    If you are in the UK, if this specimen doesn't survive, both Aldi and Lidl, regularly sell very nice acers often a tenner (nope, I don;t work for either store) just a customer!!! Most of mine came from these stores.
