Astrantia

I have a group of Astrantia plants that flower well in late June early July.  I read that if you cut them back they will give a second flush.  I have deadheaded than for the last couple of years but no second flush of flowers.   So should I actually be cutting them right back almost to the ground rather than just deadheading, as you would with Geraniums?  The plants are quite happy, even in the present drought conditions, but just no reflowering.   Any suggestions or advice is very welcome. Thanks you.

    I've had the same experience.
I've got about 6 Shaggy here and there and 4 Roma.
I cut the dead flowers off near the base of the plant, but no new flowers on either.
Roma is sterile so should flower for a long time anyway.
I guess the lack of flowers on Roma has been down to the heat this year and last.
The only thing I wonder re. Shaggy is if I should have deadheaded sooner as some of the flowers had already formed seed, so it decided its job was done.

  • I cut back all our astrantias after flowering and they do send up new flowers. I cut the old flowers right back to the plant growth and after some days (depending on the weather and this year not great) they do reflower.
