The leaves have wilted and the stems have blackened. Is this a fungus? i am very concerned i will lose them. What shall i do? Any advice much appreciated.

The soil looks incredibly dry and the leaves appear to be wilting from heat. How often and how much have you been watering them?

May well be lack of water, the soil looks very dry.

    Even the weeds are wilting!

Mine started to wilt but perked up after I left a hosepipe running on it for half an hour.  Even long established perennials are starting to wilt in this heat.

I can understand them wilting if it's very dry, but those stems are a bit worrying if it's drought. Are everybody's like that in the really dry areas? Mine are a bit red at the bottom couple of inches, but those look quite black.

Sorry if I'm being thick but - what does 'itoh' mean?

Itoh are intermediate peonies, a cross  between tree and herbaceous.  Mine forms quite a tight clump but looks more like a tree peony.  My tree peonies (delavayi) tend to be a bit rampant, spreading under paving.

Ah - thanks @fidgetbones. I'm aware of Intermediate peonies, but just hadn't seen it written like that. Probably just being a bit dim - that time of night!   :)

They’re named after a Mr Itoh who first developed them.

Thank you everyone for the input!
it can't be drought wilting, because i know what this looks like and, as @Fairygirl says, they just wilt, without getting black. Or they get reddish with sunburn. Besides the herbaceous peonies in the same border look fine, only itoh are affected.

in fact i have tried to water them less (hence the dryness) as i had had a sprinkler just over them and i thought they might have got too much water!!!

I was wondering if anyone else had encountered similar symptoms...

@fidgetbones thanks for explaining about the itoh peonies before i got the chance to!  :)
