Wisteria problems!

What's wrong with my Wisteria? I had a tiny flower on it this year, usually have a fair few flowers. How do I look after it? Clearly doing something wrong.

@FairyJennet , It doesn't look very happy, does it? How long has it been planted? They are very vigorous plants and needs lots of water whilst establishing and perhaps some feed in the Spring to boost flowering.

  • This is the 3rd year I've had it. First year, lots of flowers, then less last year, and just the one this year. I'm unsure if I've pruned it incorrectly, but maybe I need to give it more water and a feed.

@FairyJennet Just been watching Fridays Beechgrove Garden on BBC 1 Wisteria pruning explained in a very simple easy to follow way.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
  • @GardenerSuze thank you so much. I'll have a look.

I suggest you have a read of this info from the RHS and then bookmark it.

I have 2 huge, inherited wisterias here and do the 7:2 pruning very loosely now.  That is to say I prune in July and February but do not count back to precisely 7 and 2 buds as there are far too many stems.   We also get a second flush of flowers in July so I content myself with just pruning back the new, long whippy stems to fit the general framework.  February is when we can see all the naked stems and cut back any that are heading for soffit boards, gutters etc.
