Top soil depth

I’ve just had my garden levelled, in the process of putting in new fences/retainers and then looking to returf.

The area is about 80sqm, soil quite bad - very hard and full of stones. I’ve been advised by one person that a dusting of top soil will be sufficient before turfing - and another that I should be putting down 4-6inches.

Just looking for some advice/experiences on which is more accurate and the depth of top soil I should ideally be putting down.

Thanks.

I would only bring in new topsoil if you've taken away your topsoil and just left the subsoil, and in that case I would think the 4-6 inches is right.
If that is your topsoil (ie you haven't taken several inches away) I would dig in lots of organic matter, level and firm it, and only bring in more topsoil if the level is too low.

  • To give a better idea of what has been removed, here is a picture of the garden prior. 3/4 of it was a slight incline, the turf has been removed and some of the soil too to level. The last quarter of it a steeper incline/bank so turf and more of the soil.
