Olive tree

Hi. We have a 25 year old olive tree in a pot.  First couple of years it grew beautifully.  However, last year, after a spectacular growth of olives,  most of its leaves fell off.  This year, some leaves have grown back, but only at the end of branches.  Much of the branches have no or very few leaves.  Does anyone know why this might be and whether it can be rectified?  Thanks all

    Hi there - maybe it is root bound and has no more room to breathe?
    A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

    Ive got a couple of small olives in pots, one lost all its leaves this winter and I thought it was dead (not enough watering through winter as it's in a rain shadow). I watered them very regularly since Spring and both look incredibly happy. The one that lost leaves has budded back and looks a lot less leggy now, the other has put nice fresh growth but at the tips mainly. 
    If suggest giving it a year of healthy growth then pruning the tips of branches in the spring to encourage the back budding.
    I understand Mediterranean plants to want dry winters and wet summers albeit with well drained soil.
