I am sorry for being a major rookie gardener..but ..is this a plant that will come back year after year

    Yes it's a perennial lobelia - possibly Cardinalis

    I had one once … looked exactly like yours … tall and beautiful… I planted it with loving care … next morning just an inch of stump left … and a lot of slime trails 😭 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    I put one in the pond,  quite a way in from the edge,  the slugs still had it!
