Sunburnt Clematis

GrannybeeGrannybee Posts: 332
I have a Clematis Armandii growing over my garden shed - that is until last week. The leaves turned yellow and are now gradually going brown.  Although it is a north facing site, the sun does creep round in the mid to late afternoon. I think it may be sunburnt and my question is - will it recover if I cut off all the leaves and shade the base even more?

You would do better to water it generously.   Give it 15 litres at a time, poured slowly so it soaks in and repeat twice weekly till normal rain resumes.   Let the leaves fall naturally but sweep them up and compost them rather than letting them lie on the ground where they will inhibit the absorption of future rain.

  • Thank you @Grannybee, your comment made me go and look carefully at our armandii. This year has been the best flowering for years. However now I can see many areas of "dead" leaves even though there are also new growths.  Will do as @Obelixx suggests and give it a good water. It is such a great plant and hopefully we wont loose it. No rain here in the SW and temps at 4pm at 29C.

Ok I can do that - thanks very much. I hoped it would recover.  I have rigged up a green net shade and propped it over the clematis. Rain? Ha! It always misses us and it's 29 here too.
