How to deal with this shrub?

sabeehasabeeha Posts: 344
Hello,

I have this shrub which consists of a few long stems, which are mostly bare at the base but the ends have leaves.  I am trying to remember but I think they turn orangey or red.

it is between a pyracantha and a holly tree, so the area feels a bit congested.  I just pruned the pyracantha back, as I wanted it to be more bushy, suitable for the space but I’m not sure what to do with this.

I would appreciate any ideas - I’m not sure about pruning as it is quite leggy but that specific spot has a few shrubs competing for space. If I let it grow it’s just gong to come far onto the path.

Thank you

@sabeeha I'm not sure what your shrub is from the photo but it is in need of a complete renovation. Cutting back hard will enable it to leaf from further down. The ground is so dry at present it might be a job for the autumn. However I would cut it back from the path if it is a trip hazard. Try to cut back to a bud if you can.  Assuming it does flower you may loose these next year but it will give it time to rejuvinate. Need to find out what it is first .
One last thought is do you need it perhaps the holly and pyracantha should be given a chance to fill the space in time, or perhaps they could also benefit from some pruning as well to give it a chance.

Looks like Forsythia, Flowers in Spring and ideally pruned after, if pruned now you will lose next years flowers.

Thank you @GardenerSuze for your feedback - I have thought about removing it and letting the pyracantha take that space but the leaves look so pretty in autumn amongst a mass of what is mainly green, I have hesitated!

@Loraine3 thank you yes I think that is the name 🙂
