Echium Pininana - Pot Size

Hi there,

people will probably think I'm crazy.  I recently acquired two Echium Pininana and they are now at home with me in Northern Germany.  Unfortunately planting them out is not an option as the winters here get down to -20°C some nights.  I have them in pots and will have to find a way to sucessfully get them through the winter.  Currently they are in a 64 litre pot (18" x 15" x 15").  Will this pot be big enough for them to flower?

Maybe if you put them in a huge pot each you may be lucky,  they grow very large,  trunks as big as your arm and up to 15/20’ tall.
If they were given to you then you can try,  what will you do with them in the winter?

  • As far as I have found out, they need to be kept cool and in bright conditions.  I will move them into my garage, wrap the pots in fleece.  I have just ordered a plant grow light to provide the brightness needed.
