@Obelixx re: We shall have to start saving the water we run before the tap gets hot
You might be surprised how much water this is. Our kitchen and bath are similar distance to the boiler and it’s 2.5l. That is enough water for an average plant to survive for 1 week in these circumstances.
I have around 5l excess water a day for 2 plants or 14 plants a week. So, all newly planted shrubs and plants get a minimum to survive.

In our house it is 9 to 10 litres to get the hot water upstairs from the boiler. In this hot weather I have been washing with cold water over the sink (I have a bidet which is a great help for saving water) In winter I save it to flush the toilet but I don't do this if I have guests staying 😁.
My brother lives in Stowmarket - 25c forecast there tomorrow..'only' 20c here in South Lancs. United Utilities have no plans to introduce a hose pipe ban...we mainly get our water via the Haweswater aqueduct.
We have 10 pints of water to run off before our hot comes in, all saved for various things. We've got our own pumping station but that’s paid for by South West Water. We can’t ever use a hose pipe up here.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
