If you still have colour and interest in other beds @REMF33, It might be worth getting a head start on the Autumn preparation for that bed. You've had a tough time over the last few months, so it might be time to look forward and plan ahead for next year. Maybe ask for some planting suggestions, post a photo or two ?
Sounds like time to plan for next year's flowers. Bulb catalogues have dropped through my door already so they'll soon be in the shops too, and anything except tulips can be planted straight away.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Actually I do . Just a small one, useful for hoiking out old roots, buried bricks/stones etc.
The suggestion for bulbs (great for reliable spring colour, what's not to love?) was aimed at @REMF33, sorry for any misunderstanding.

I have already ordered my bulbs, although the new ones will go in pots. Last years' potted ones will go in the ground, but not in the beds in mentioned as I can't wait for the foliage to die back Will post pics... I am a bit ashamed (!) but as I said, things have been tricky. Will try harder next year I hate to be thinking so far ahead in a way. Should be enjoying what there is now. I have to go up north to sort out stuff at my mother's house this weekend (get it valued etc.) but when I get back will tackle the garden. I am embarrassed to say that there are still some poor plants that I grew from seed that never made it out of their 3 inch pots. I might as well put them in if I can. Some are perennials. I feel so cruel... I think one of my problems is that one of my beds - which is quite new, having removed a couple of shrubs - has been devoted mainly to annuals I grow from seed. I need to have a better balance of annuals and perennials. I have not yet developed an eye for the big picture. I started growing flowers to photograph individually 3-4 years ago and probably still see them in those terms.
@REMF33 I have also ordered some bulbs and will probably order more. I always think it is a good way to look forward to the garden next year. Not that I am enjoying the garden now but it is a very difficult season.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
