A question please. How do you tell which are the male flowers on the cucumber plant? I can tell on courgette plants - are the cucumber plants on a "stalk" too?
I have sown another batch of cucumber plants which are at the 4/6 leaf stage - no flowers yet. Hopefully, for a crop mid/late next month.
The male flowers are on a stem, the female ones start to swell behind the flower from the beginning. I find the first flowers are usually male, the female ones come a bit later. I haven't had to remove male flowers from my Beth Alpha @tui34
I read recently that the hot spell had stressed the cucumbers, they loose their chlorophyll, they don't go pale green, they go yellow. Mine went yellow in two days (the 2 when temperatures of 40c plus were threatened) it said they would have thick skin,be bitter and inedible. They did have thick skin, which I removed, the cucumbers tasted fine, they weren't bitter
@tui34 I have only ever grown all female cucumber plants over here without any problems. At the moment I have Passandra F1, the seeds were from the UK, but now I can't get them anymore so next year will revert back to Jazzer F1 bought here and also all female and a a good cropper ( well, unless we have too many heatwaves)!!
Hi tui. I have the same problem. Here was too hot and we had last proper rain on the end of May. Many of my veggies are ruined and cucumbers are bitter.
