I've grown some from seed this spring and I know they won't flower this year. It's not really a bad thing as they will put their growth into producing a bigger, stronger plant, rather than flowers.
I don't know what others who grow this lovely huge plant do, but I cut mine right down to about 6" in autumn. Not failed me yet, and it's been in the ground for at least ten years.
I do too @SlipperyElm otherwise the huge leaves just rot all over the other plants. Do you ever deadhead yours as well or leave the seedheads for wildlife?
I am now feeling very excited as I have grown some from seed this year. I have 8 very well-grown plants ready to plant out. A good job I have a large space to fill! I was going to mix them in with several of my viburnum bonarniensis as a filter screen at the back of a bed. A wafting backdrop!
