Privacy
Hi, i have really low fences at both sides of my garden. They are shared fences. It is an option for me to pay to make higher but my neighbours may not agree. I would like to look at trees & shrubs for creating privacy & to add greenery. However im worried roots may impact my patio, i worry they may overhang the neighbours or that it would make my garden feel enclosed. I have been googling many options but im unsure what will be best as im a novice. I would appreciate your advice, thanks

I see your neighbours have built a pergola at the bottom of their garden, presumably to help with privacy. Have you considered doing that and growing climbers over it perhaps?
For the lower fences, l think you would be okay to add trellis on the top and plant climbers if your neighbours are happy with that, it does depend on who the fence belongs to.
If you could give a little more information, such as is the garden sunny or shady, that will help with suggestions
The sun goes across the back of the garden later in the day. The sun is at the front of the house in a morning
I was thinking of bamboo in pots but then i worried about them spreading. Thought about red robin but worried about roots. I may be over thinking it!
Your planting space is a bit small for trees or big shrubs but grasses might be an option if you can't have a trellis.
I agree with @Posy, l would go round and have a word with them. Explain what you'd like to do, and emphasise the fact that you will be putting up trellis, therefore you wouldn't be blocking out all the light. Maybe even that you will buy a section of trellis, (you can always use it elsewhere), and fix it temporarily so that they can see what it looks like.
Sometimes people just want to feel that they're involved in the decision making and not faced with a fait accompli.
I would avoid bamboo in the ground (even the clumping types don't necessarily read their own labels). You could plant them in big pots, l think thaf would bd okay as lomg as you monitor them.
Grasses such as stipa would give you a similar look, but wouldn't give you the same amount of privacy, especially in early Spring when they're cut back.
