Pink Mophead now Blue Lacecap.

Fran IOMFran IOM Posts: 2,872
My pink hydrangea bush is at least five years old and has always produced lovely pink mopheads. This year I got the surprise of my life as it has now decided it is a blue lace cap.
Absolutely nothing has changed in it's situation so any ideas why this would happen?
Here is a pic of it today and although it is definitely blue the photo doesn't show it as well.

@Fran IOM Have you mulched it with something different maybe?

How strange that it should change from a mop head to a lace cap, though. I’ve heard of them changing colour, depending on the soil they are in, but not type. I hope someone might be along soon with an answer for you, @Fran IOM

Haven't mulched it with anything in fact it's in the area of my allotment which is always the last to get attention.
I could understand if it had just changed colour. At the other end of the flower bed I have a blue hydrangea about the same age. Will go over there shortly and see if that has changed to a pink lace cap!  :D  Too hot to garden but need to see to the birds' food and water.
Many thanks to you both for your input.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe they're opening from the outer petals inward. I can't tell from the photo if the middle bits are opened fertile flowers or unopened buds.

@Fran IOM A real puzzle.  All I am doing is checking for the birds too. Heard an Owlet in the night calling out hope it is ok.

@SYinUSA. That is a thought but I will have to wait some time yet to see the finished flower and will report back.
@GardenerSuze. Sparrows were waiting for their mealworms but the goldfinches don't seem to be so hungry of late. Usually the sunflower hearts have gone but the last few days they haven't emptied the feeders. Plenty of water for them now. Maybe the Owlet was waiting for a parent to return with some food.  :)
