Pond water

Evening,

Our wildlife pond is getting really too low and our water butts are empty. I don’t want to top it up with tap water but I have quite a few 5ltr bottles of distilled water - would it be safe to use or would it cause an algal bloom?

    I fill up my garden trug with tap water and leave it over night to let the chemicals burn off then add it in the morning.

    Does that reduce/eliminate nitrates though? I know that works ok re the chlorine.

    I'd have thought you'd be better off with two water dispersed through a spray hose than distilled water.

    That's how I fill the trug, through a spray hose, my frogs and newts seem happy with this method

    I hadn't thought of doing that @WonkyWomble thanks for the tip. My pond is quite low and i have fish in it.

    I use this method in a customer's garden pond which holds both fish and frogs and they are always very relieved at the raised water level @floralies 👍😊

    We had the possibility  of a little drizzle last night … but nothing happened …

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    I have always topped up my pond with tap water and never had a problem. The amount of established water is so much greater than any I put in I assumed it negated the chemicals. My pond has frogs, newts and fish, none of which seem affected by the addition of tap water.

    We cleaned our pond out in the spring and it hasn't reached a balance yet, it's rather pea green with all this sun. The Lily and oxygenators haven't established enough yet but the fish don't seem to mind!
