I moved mine in the spring and chopped it back. It is huge again now.

I wouldn't try to move or plant anything till autumn.

I was just going to post the same as @AnniD about Nachtvlinder. Lovely, but thuggish. It spreads under the surface from the roots and pops up all around where you first plant it.
I'm with @Hostafan1 on Hotlips, but each to their own.

You’ve said you don’t like it, so dig it out when you can. If you’ve friends who do like it take cuttings for them.
A big plant rarely copes well being potted up unless cut back v hard IME. Ideal then to do those cuttings for others.

I had to move one a few weeks back about that size and I just hacked it back and then stuck it in a new spot. So far it shows no sign of stopping it as it's coming back strongly unfortunately ;) . I've given away so many of these over the years but never really liked it myself (others in the household do, as does pretty much everyone else). It was bought as a royal bumble but not in flower and it's the two tone garishness that puts me off. I don't mind bright contrasting colours but prefer single colour, more subtle salvias.

Can anyone recommend a purple one that doesn't get too big?  Or at least not as big as Hot Lips please.

Javier is one, gets to about 65cms but the foliage is a lighter green.

There is one called Emperor which is very similar to Nachtvlinder but l don't know if it runs the same way.

    Christine Yeo is shorter.

I can recommend "Dilly Dilly" but it may be the wrong shade of purple for you.

@GardenerSuze , My favourite purple salvia is S. "Mirage Deep Purple" https://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/salvia-mirage-deep-purple-balmirdepur-pbr-mirage-series/classid.2000028660/. Not recommending Crocus but their picture looks fairly true. It's on Sarah Raven's website but their picture looks paler than the real thing. Bigger flowers than Nachtvlinder and a brighter purple but not veering into either magenta or lavender. Mine is in a pot so I can't say how big it would get in the ground. RHS site says 30-35cm, Crocus and Sarah Raven both say 40cm. I bought mine from B&Q a few years ago alongside S. "Mirage Cherry Red".
    S. "Lavender Dilly Dilly" gets much bigger then Deep Purple by the end of the season for me, and is a light-ish lavender blue, not really purple to my eye but I suppose it's subjective.

@AnniD and @JennyJ Thankyou both I did take a look on Middletons web site there are so many.It is good to hear from you both and your experiences of actully growing them.
I grow two S.Greggii Bue Note and S Mirage Cherry Red. I think the Greggii forms are hardier? However both came through the winter ok. It has only been recently that I have grown them and I would love some more.  Maybe I will go for two one darker and a pale one.Suze
